Buying Your First Piano

I subscribe to a number of music blogs and I try to pass on any stellar articles I find. The following article appears on the Kodaly & Orff blog and provides some excellent advice on buying your first piano. I’ll summarize here, but you’ll probably want to click through and read the whole thing:
- Don’t waste a bunch of money on your first piano. Find a used upright in the classified ads. If you’re just getting started, there’s a possibility that you’ll decide you weren’t interested in piano after all, and then you don’t want to be stuck with an expensive new one.
- Don’t worry about looks — just make sure it sounds good: even volume from each key, no tinny-sounding keys, etc.
- DO spring for a nice bench. You don’t want to get back and wrist problems. Make sure it is adjustable and has a padded seat.
